For first-year BA (Hons) Architectural Design and Technology student Nur Hassan, a career in architecture has always felt close to home.
"I was personally influenced at a young age since my father is an architect. I was exposed to the profession early on, giving me an understanding of the work done. I knew that through seeing his work, I wanted to study something in relation to architecture."
After completing a foundation year at Southampton Solent University, Nur discovered just how broad and creative the industry could be.
"Once I completed my foundation year at Solent, I was introduced to the architecture field in more depth. This exposed me to much creative potential and a wide range of possibilities it offers. The experience made me curious, and I strengthened my interest in pursuing architecture as a career. As a result, I felt confident in choosing this course at Solent and knew it was the right choice for me, it aligns with my passion and career aspirations."

Looking ahead, Nur's ambitions stretch beyond graduation. The plan is to continue studying with a master's degree before building a career that focuses on restoring and revitalising the built environment.
"Once I graduate, I would like to complete a master's and move onto a career where I can help the community and society I live in. I find great interest in recovering a demolished structure and giving it meaning."
At Solent, that ambition is already being supported through practice-led learning that connects classroom knowledge with real-world challenges. Through course modules, Nur has been developing an understanding of how different materials can improve and transform buildings, skills that directly support future career goals in refurbishment and regeneration.
"This knowledge becomes useful for me to use in the future and relates to my ambitions for recovering and refurbishing."
The course has also provided opportunities to build professional connections and gain a clearer understanding of the industry. Guest speakers regularly share their experiences, offering advice on both university work and future careers, while a visit to London gave students the chance to see architecture in practice.
"The lecturers in my course have been able to bring guest speakers to talk about their experiences and advice in the industry, as well as guidance on our work. Additionally, we have been taken to a London trip focusing on two separate architecture firms, helping us students get an understanding of the industry."
Developing career-ready skills has gone beyond technical knowledge. Nur has gained confidence communicating with professionals and collaborating with others, experiences that are becoming an important part of university life.
"Being able to talk to professionals from the industry in a qualified manner" has been one of the biggest learning experiences, alongside "working with a group and collaborating" during student representative activities.

As a course representative, Nur has also had the opportunity to help shape the student experience, working closely with lecturers to raise feedback and improve the course for fellow students.
"In many ways, they have been able to give us consistent weekly feedback for our work. As a student course representative, I have been able to create a more comfortable and satisfied space for my course mates through the help of my lecturers."
That strong support network has been one of the standout parts of studying at Solent. Alongside approachable lecturers, Nur has found encouragement from students across different year groups, creating a collaborative community where everyone is willing to help.
Reflecting on the journey so far, one lesson stands out above all else.
"There are endless possibilities and changes that can be made during the university experience. I began at Solent looking at Interior Design and through my year in Solent I was able to learn my true passion and interest. University is there to help secure your future and at Solent they ensure you find your passion for your future."
For anyone considering the course, Nur has a few words of advice:
"There is a great amount of support from lecturers if something is difficult to understand or if you are interested in looking for a job in the industry. Additionally, there is support coming from students in different years that are here to aid you whenever in need."
For Nur, university has been about more than studying architecture. It has been an opportunity to discover a passion, build industry connections and develop the confidence and practical skills needed for a career that will help shape the communities of the future.
