From deck cadet to future nurse: Toby McGill’s career-ready journey at Solent

Now in his second year studying Adult Nursing (BSc) at Solent, Toby is building the skills, confidence, and practical experience needed to pursue his ambition of becoming a nurse at sea.

Although he admits he once doubted whether university-level healthcare study was possible for him, his earlier degree gave him the confidence to take the leap.

“I was always told I was a tad thick, but I already had a degree from my cadetship, so I thought - why not? I applied to Solent because I already knew the campus, loved the area, and found it much more personal and practical than other universities, which I really liked.”

“The lecturers are very hands-on and happy to help. It’s the practical skills and teaching that help us become nurses rather than machines that just go from one patient to the next.”

Toby believes the course has helped students develop not only technical abilities, but also the confidence to be proactive and compassionate healthcare professionals.

“They’re teaching us how to multitask, be hands-on nurses, and really get involved in our learning.”

This practical approach reflects Solent’s career-ready revolution, where students gain real-world experience throughout their studies and learn the professional skills employers are looking for.

“In university, we have simulated placements, and by starting with these, I was able to gain a lot of experience that I would initially struggle to get in a hospital or care environment.”

Through these simulations, Toby learned a range of clinical skills including correct ECG dot placement, NG tube insertion and female catheterisation.

“Having those experiences early gave me a head start compared to other universities on placement because I’d already learned more practical skills from the start. So far, I’ve been on an acute surgical ward, an elderly care ward, a renal ward, and currently a cardiac high dependency unit. All of them have given me opportunities to work with a vast wealth of knowledgeable people where I can learn from their own experiences.”

For Toby, one of the standout aspects of studying at Solent has been the support from lecturers.

“My lecturers have been extremely supportive with both assignments and on the pastoral side. They’re always there if you need to talk about life or university. They’re really good at helping with assignments, especially when deadlines are coming up.”

That strong support network has helped Toby balance the demands of studying nursing while continuing to grow personally and professionally. Outside of clinical practice, Toby has also developed valuable leadership and communication skills through his role as course representative.

“The most important thing I’ve learned is definitely leadership. With this role, I’ve learned about effective communication, making sure people understand both sides of every conversation, and getting definitive answers when required on the course.”

These experiences are helping Toby build the confidence and professional skills that will be essential throughout his future nursing career.

“I would like to work at sea as a nurse, but the main point is to qualify first, then build up some experience before I head off to sea.”

Reflecting on his experience so far, Toby encourages prospective students to embrace the practical opportunities and varied perspectives available on the course.

“I love how hands-on the university is and how it makes you feel like your voice matters. We get outsiders giving guest lectures and experts in the field who provide different perspectives and a really well-rounded education. Some things you may not need straight away, but you’ll still have the knowledge.”

For Toby, that combination of practical learning, supportive teaching, and real-world preparation is exactly what makes studying nursing at Solent such a valuable experience.
