Can what we watch on TV influence real trials? Uncover the truth behind the CSI Effect.
The media plays a powerful role in shaping public perceptions of crime, justice, and the investigative process.
This interactive session explores the concept of the “CSI Effect” - the idea that crime dramas and forensic television shows influence how the public understands (and sometimes misunderstands) real-world criminal investigations.
Together, we’ll examine how these media portrayals can create unrealistic expectations of evidence and forensic science, and how such misconceptions may even affect courtroom trials and the wider Criminal Justice System.
Through discussion and case examples, you’ll gain insight into the complex relationship between media, public opinion, and justice - and discover how criminology helps us unpack the gap between fiction and reality.
