Design grad selected as one to watch

Louis Ross, a BA (Hons) Graphic Design graduate at Southampton Solent University, is celebrating industry recognition for an impressive Final Major Project (FMP) which tells the story of space exploration in a new way.

Every year, Design Week - the UK's leading trade publication on the subject - selects outstanding FMPs by graduating talent across the whole country. This year, just 24 projects were featured by the magazine, including Louis' One Giant Leap for Mankind?

Inspired by the Space Race - a fierce competition between the United States of America and Soviet Union during the 20th century - Louis' FMP saw him create an interactive book, eye-catching posters and an educational website. A key goal for the emerging designer with this project was accurate storytelling:

"Telling the story of 'humanity's greatest achievement' solely from the stereotypical Western perspective would risk misrepresenting the significance and global impact of the social changes that occurred during the Space Race era," Louis says.

"With the aim of educating and informing a wide audience, I set out to tell both sides of this story, prioritising the social events that erupted social progression as we know it today."

With deft skill, Louis' FMP draws attention to the overshadowed aspects of a landmark time in human history, providing thoughtfully designed educational resources that focus on gender, racial and social equality. On being recognised for his work, Louis says:

"This is something I am very grateful and proud of, as the goal for this project was to inform and educate a wider audience about the subject matter. I feel that keeping my values of creating with meaning will drive me to create and improve as a young, aspiring creative."

When it comes to the University's role in developing Louis as an early-career designer of the highest calibre, he says, "Solent has shaped me into a creative who enjoys all aspects of the design process. Studying graphic design has developed my technical and conceptual skills as a creative that can push boundaries and aim to design and contribute for a better tomorrow."
