29 September 2025

Southampton Solent University’s School of Health and Sport has ranked highly in the Guardian University Guide 2026.

Rising 28 places, marking the University as one of the top ten highest climbers in this year’s Guardian University Guide, courses in Solent’s School of Health and Sport have contributed to this success.

Home to a diversity of courses which place an emphasis on practice-led learning, the school’s sport science subjects are among those which ranked highly in the most recent guide. The University offers students on these courses a wide range of opportunities to develop their skills in practice-led environments, an approach which has placed them in the top 15% nationally for teaching satisfaction.

With an emphasis on industry, supporting students to gain networks and experiences which boost their employability, the subject area also now ranks in top 25% for career prospects. Dr Beverly Joshua, Interim Dean of the School of Health and Sport, says:

“This year’s Guardian University Guide results reflect the very high quality of learning and teaching at Solent, while also showcasing the impact our approach has. Students on courses in health and sport have fantastic opportunities to put their learning into practice, while our industry links strengthen their experience here at Solent. Congratulations to the whole school for these well-deserved achievements.”

Among the school’s impressive results is the University’s top 10 overall ranking for courses in journalism, which includes BA (Hons) Sports Journalism. It also ranked in the top 25% for teaching satisfaction and career prospects, with graduates going on to carve out successful careers in broadcast journalism, including with the BBC and Sky Sports.

Psychology and criminology courses round up the school’s success, with the latter appearing in top 10% country-wide when it comes to the level of dedicated resources students have access to while they learn*. Courses in this area also ranked in the top 25% nationally, and psychology subjects placed 22 out of 114 institutions for teaching satisfaction.

Students in the School of Health and Sport have gained bespoke experience in a huge range of environments this year, from the World Transplant Games and the Gothia Cup, to Wembley Stadium and alongside Hampshire Cricket.

Solent University’s success in this year's Guardian University Guide has been followed by a 22-place rise in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026. Both results highlight the high quality of Solent’s triple TEF Gold learning and teaching.
