Five talented BA (Hons) Television Production students at Southampton Solent University have been nominated for an award at the prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) Student Television Awards.
Taking place at the iconic IET London: Savoy Place on Friday 13 June, the RTS Student Television Awards are the biggest celebration of this kind. Bringing together the best and brightest undergraduate talent in the country, these awards shine a light on the next generation of creatives looking to carve out a career in the industry.
Among this year's shortlisted nominees - chosen during a highly competitive selection process - are Television Production undergraduates, Callum Felice, James Smith, Ben Cry, Will Cann and James Gibson. The collective have been nominated for the Undergraduate Saving the Planet Award, which recognises a high-quality production focusing on the natural world.
The group's nominated documentary, One Woman's Green Revolution, follows Lyn Brayshaw, a climate activist who is the Local Group Coordinator of Greenpeace Southampton. The documentary was made as part of a course assignment at Solent and inspired by a story the team read in the local paper. They say:
"We found an article about Lyn that intrigued us. It went into detail highlighting how she uses environmental hacks to reduce her cost of living, and so we reached out to her. She was more than happy for us to make this film about her and raise awareness of climate change.
"The film follows her lifestyle as a climate activist as she lives, breathes and advocates for a greener world."
Solent's practice-led approach to learning and teaching leads students to success in their chosen fields, with graduates going on to work in a variety of roles in the creative industries. Dr Stuart Joy, Course Leader Film and Television, says:
"This nomination is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of Callum, James, Ben, Will and James. Their documentary is a remarkable example of how our students are engaging with and contributing to important global issues. It also underscores the high calibre of teaching and the creative opportunities available at Southampton Solent University."
On the value of studying a creative subject at university, the team say:
"We've enjoyed our time at Solent, meeting new people, making friends and having the opportunity to work at music festivals like Glastonbury. We have access to amazing professional equipment, and we get to do many different creative projects, which have prepared us for the future."
The winners of the 2025 RTS Student Television Awards will be announced on Friday 13 June. Find out more about Solent's film, television and media degrees here.
