New seminar series has global reach

11 December 2025

Academics from universities across the globe have taken part in a new seminar series launched at Southampton Solent University which explores the term, Global South.

Solent’s Lecturer in Criminology Dr Amy Duvenage and Professor of Social Sciences Elaine Arnull have pooled their areas of expertise to launch ‘What is the Global South and Why it Matters’ - a seminar series which, in 2025, saw more than 160 registrants for sessions designed to encourage discussion and debate.

The series, which will continue into 2026, invites experts in social science and social work – as well as academics, policy makers, researchers and practitioners – to take a deep dive into the Global South and why it matters. Specifically, the series stimulates conversation around policy and practice related to the Global South in a bid to discuss its relevance and enhance understanding of its application.

Following its success during 2025, the series will return next year and invites anyone engaged in the social sciences to take part, giving delegates the opportunity to network, build meaningful connections and take part in knowledge exchange.

The seminar has already welcomed speakers from the Central University of Gujarat, University of South Africa (UNISA), and the University of Maryland. Amy says:

“We look forward to building on this momentum in 2026. We will continue to explore with the public, professionals and other academics how theoretical ideas have real-world effects in areas such as policing, teaching, social work, psychology, youth justice, community development, nursing, government policy and research practice.”
