Prizes for outstanding students

16 June 2025

On Friday 6 June, Southampton Solent University’s Film and Media Awards celebrated the next generation of media talent, as they get ready to graduate.

29 awards were handed out on the night, as graduating students from the University’s Department of Film and Media came together for an evening of celebration at Solent’s The Spark, generously supported by Neck of the Woods.

With awards given out for everything from best sound design and social justice storytelling to an audience award for best film and a trophy for cinematography, the evening championed the skill and dedication of this year’s graduating students.

Course Leader Film and Television, Dr Stuart Joy says:

“The Film and Media Awards are all about celebrating the creativity, passion, and hard work of our incredible students. This year’s showcase is packed with bold, thought-provoking work that not only tells powerful stories but also challenges ideas and sparks important conversations.

“So many of these films explore themes of representation, identity, and social change – reminding us of the real impact media can have in the world. It’s a genuine privilege to share their achievements with peers, industry guests, and the wider community.”

Among the winners were BA (Hons) Television Production student, Will Swain and BA (Hons) Film and Television undergrad, Natalie Madziyire who each took home coveted prizes for Outstanding Collaborative Achievement and Outstanding Student Achievement respectively.

Will has made a memorable contribution to Solent during his time as a student. He took home the Outstanding Collaborative Achievement Award for spearheading the University hosting the 52nd National Student Television Association (NaSTA) Conference and Awards in April 2025.

Will’s hard work resulted in a successful weekend, which welcomed hundreds of students from around the country to the heart of Solent University’s campus and saw undergrads gain bespoke live events work experience. On this win, he says:

“Over three years, I’ve worked alongside Solent Productions as an intern, with SonarEvents leading basketball broadcasts for two years, and leading the NaSTA Awards, which gave 70 students an opportunity to produce a three-day event. Winning this award has given me recognition for the amount of work I’ve put in both at university and to students; it’s something I’ve been passionate about since day one.”

Natalie’s commitment to civic engagement and contributing to events and activities which took place in the community saw her win the prize for Outstanding Student Achievement. Alongside Southampton Forward, Natalie has promoted inclusive storytelling and cultural connections through projects such as City Reflections and Home Theatre. She says:

“I am so proud of myself for receiving this award. I've put in a lot of work over the past three years to become the person that I am today, and it means a lot to be recognised for that hard work.

“I will carry this achievement with me throughout my future career!”

Both Will and Natalie, alongside their peers across a range of creative courses in film, television and media, are now getting ready to enter the world of work as skilled creatives.
