Solent-inspired project celebrates coastal life and heritage

9 June 2026

A Southampton Solent University student has transformed her passion for marine life and the distinctive waters of the Solent into a visually striking final major project that captures the essence and personality of the region.

Third-year BA (Hons) Graphic Design student, Carmen Yau, has produced a beautifully crafted book exploring the heart of the Solent through its wildlife, fishing culture, maritime industryies, hidden histories and coastal communities – celebrating both its natural environment and rich heritage.

Developed through extensive research and first-hand engagement, Carmen’s project draws on interviews with fishermen, visits to local libraries and time spent observing the area’s unique coastal landscape to shine a light on stories and perspectives that are often overlooked.

“Being able to bring to life a campaign that highlights and celebrates an often-overlooked area, transforming it into something beautiful and exciting, is what inspired me,” says Carmen, who was born in Southampton.

“I wanted to combine all the knowledge and skills I’ve gained over the past few years to create something I could truly be proud of – something I can take with me that reminds me of my time at Solent University while also helping me move towards a future career in graphic design.”

Her project showcases a wide range of practical skills developed during her degree, including screen printing, lino cutting and bookbinding – demonstrating Solent’s emphasis on hands-on, practice-led learning.

This experiential approach is central to Solent University’s creative courses, which are designed to equip students with industry-relevant skills and real-world experience. By working on live briefs, building portfolios and engaging with external organisations, students are empowered to strengthen their CVs while still studying and graduate feeling confident and career-ready.

Alongside her studies, Carmen has already begun building professional experience through an internship with local charity Yellow Door, further enhancing her employability and understanding of design in a real-world context.

Reflecting on her time at Solent, Carmen highlights both the academic and personal impact of her degree:

“I’ve loved learning so much – everything from hierarchy to colour theory. The lecturers have been so supportive, sharing their knowledge, skills and advice, and I’ve made great friends along the way. Studying in the city that I know and love, with beautiful parks on the doorstep, has made it an extra special experience.”

Carmen’s creative journey began at a young age, drawing every day as a child using supplies gifted by her father. After studying Fine Art at Itchen College, she chose to stay local and continue her education at Solent University, where she could develop her passion for art and design into a professional career.

Now preparing to graduate, Carmen feels confident about the future, equipped with a strong portfolio and the skills needed to succeed in the creative industries.
