Southampton Solent University has awarded leading economist Andrew Haldane an Honorary Doctor of Economics today (Wednesday 8 July).
Andrew was recognised for his outstanding contribution to economics, public policy and social impact, joining graduating students from the School of The Creative Industries as they celebrated their achievements.
One of the UK’s most influential economic thinkers, Andrew serves as Chancellor of the University of Sheffield and President of the British Chambers of Commerce.
His wide-ranging leadership roles include Chair of the Glasshouse International Centre for Music and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, and Founder and President of the charity Pro Bono Economics.
Andrew’s distinguished career includes serving as Chief Economist at the Bank of England, where he was a member of both the Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Policy Committee.
He has held senior roles in government, including Permanent Secretary at the Cabinet Office, and chaired the Government’s Industrial Strategy Council and Levelling Up Advisory Council.
A strong advocate for economic understanding and inclusion, Andrew is Chair of the National Numeracy Leadership Council and an ambassador for charities including National Numeracy and Futures for All. He is also Contributing Editor at the Financial Times and serves on a number of academic and industry advisory boards.
An accomplished academic and author, Andrew has published more than 200 articles and four books. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society of Arts and holds honorary positions across higher education.
On receiving his honorary award, Andrew said, “I am honoured and delighted to receive this Honorary Doctorate from Southampton Solent University whose practice-led approach to higher education is delivering huge benefits for students, communities and societies.”
