Student shortlisted for leading design competition

2 February 2026

Southampton Solent University (Solent) fashion design student Belle Fletcher has been shortlisted for the prestigious Graduate Fashion Foundation (GFF) x Liberty design competition.

Open to third-year fashion students both nationally and internationally, the competition attracts a high standard of emerging talent, making Belle’s shortlisting a significant achievement. The recognition highlights not only Belle’s creative ability, but also the quality of teaching and industry focus within Solent’s Fashion Design course.

As part of the next stage of the competition, Belle will now create her designs using Liberty fabric, which will be provided by the iconic British retailer. Her final pieces will be showcased on the catwalk in June during Graduate Fashion Week, held in London.

Speaking about her shortlisting, Belle said:

“It’s really humbling to be unbiasedly shortlisted for this opportunity. You never know what to expect when you submit projects to competitions like this to be judged by people who aren’t already familiar with your work – it’s quite vulnerable. But I really identified with the brief this time, and for it to be with a brand as prestigious as Liberty, I’m going to try my very best not to waste the chance!”

Emma Calder, Course Lead for Fashion Design at Southampton Solent University, added:

“We’re extremely proud of Belle and her achievement. Being shortlisted for a competition of this calibre is a testament to her creativity, dedication and technical skill. Opportunities like this demonstrate the strength of our Fashion Design course and our commitment to preparing students for the realities of the industry.”

The announcement comes shortly after the Graduate Fashion Foundation visited Southampton Solent University’s campus last week to deliver a talk on Graduate Fashion Week to students across all year groups, including fashion and makeup courses.

Managing Director Nicola Hitchens introduced students to the wide range of competitions and award opportunities available this year, as well as outlining how students from all year groups can get involved through work experience at the London event. She also highlighted GFF’s new Student Ambassador scheme.

During the visit, Nicola shared valuable advice on engaging with industry professionals, preparing portfolios and CVs, and what students can expect from Graduate Fashion Week, including how to make the most of the experience.

Southampton Solent University offers a leading Fashion Design course, supported by academics with extensive industry experience. Students benefit from access to more than 100 hours of work-based learning before graduation, ensuring they are well prepared to succeed as soon as they enter the fashion industry.
