Free massages and lessons on sweat proof makeup - Solent Girls Can!

Free massages, lessons on sweat-proof make up and help to choose the right sports bra were just some of the things on offer to female students as part of the ‘Solent Girls Can’ event.

The event was to support the national campaign ‘This Girl Can’ and was held ahead of International Women’s Day, which sees women’s achievements celebrated around the world and calls for greater equality.

Organised by BA (Hons) Fashion with Public Relations students, and supported by Solent Sport, Re:So (the University’s student-run shop), New Look, Women’s UNISON and Fairtrade Fortnight, the aim of the event was to get more women involved in sport and physical activity and join in with the global celebrations. And it certainly did that.

Over 100 students took part and signed up to find out more about the sporting opportunities available for female students at the University.

“International Women’s Day was about celebrating all things women. The purpose was to inspire women and girls to try something new, by breaking down perceived barriers and enhancing confidence,” says Kate Donnelly, Sport Development Officer at Solent Sport.

“We had a MAC-trained make-up artist showing students sweat-proof make up tips and lots of women received advice about sports bras fittings, which the students identified as two things that can often be a barrier to taking up sport.

“The students who organised this did a fantastic job. We gave them three objectives: to engage with students who haven’t engaged with us before; celebrate International Women’s Week; and raise the profile of Solent Sport.

“They came up with the idea of the event and have done a great job.”
