Solent sports students were invited to celebrate their achievements at this year’s annual Sports Awards ceremony, held at the O2 Guildhall Southampton.
BBC sports journalist Tony Husband joined us again this year as the evening’s host, announcing the winning sportsmen and women for 2018. Guest of honour was New Zealand cricketer, Suzie Bates.
Two special awards were presented ahead of the official ceremony. The 2018 Rising Star Award, which recognises a young, outstanding athlete (12-18 years old), was presented to Fay Endean. The 2018 Solent Sport Alumni Award was awarded to diver Gary Hunt, who was recognised for his contribution to sport.
Southampton Football Club was headline sponsor of the Sports Awards for the second year running. Commenting on their support, Tom James, Sponsorship Manager, commented: “The University and Southampton Football Club work closely together on a number of joint initiatives throughout the year, underpinned by our shared values.
“We were delighted to once again sponsor the Sports Awards and hear about some of the inspirational stories and work that students are doing both for their clubs and in the community. We would like to congratulate everyone that was shortlisted for this year’s award and look forward to watching the individual and teams progress going forward’.
