Shoosmiths Solicitors speak at Southampton City Law Network event
Here, Southampton Solent Business School look back at the Southampton City Law Network event.
Solicitor Tom Storey of Coffin Mew Solicitors and Trainee Solicitor Karina Moore of Shoosmiths Solicitors gave inspirational key note speeches at the most recent Southampton City Law Network event. The theme was employability and professionalism, and followed on from November’s event, which covered job applications for the legal profession.
Karina’s presentation and Q&A focused on a vital yet often neglected area of employability: having a varied and interesting CV.
Karina’s core message was “get involved”. This emphasised the fact that employers are looking for more than just academic results when reviewing job applications. Karina also gave important insights into various selection methods used by employers in addition to formal interviews. These include assessment centres that are not frequently part of any formal careers instruction at university.
Tom followed Karina with a presentation themed on professionalism. This provided our law students with a different understanding of life in a legal professional environment as well as how to prosper in it. In addition, Tom also covered a wide range of areas important to a successful future career as a solicitor.
The evening event was well attended by over 50 delegates including high numbers of Solent University students and a group of law teaching staff.
