Alumni: Samm Henshaw
Recent graduate Samm Henshaw is already making his mark in the music industry. We catch up with the former BA (Hons) Popular Music Performance student to find out what he’s been up to since he finished his studies in summer 2015.
Tell us a bit about your music…
I started making music in my first year of uni with my friend and (at the time) a popular music production student.
What’s the inspiration behind your music?
God, my family, life experiences, other styles of music etc.
You’ve recently been on tour with James Bay, how did you get involved?
I believe James saw a video I had done with Mahogany that he tweeted about, saying that he loved it and next thing I knew, I was hearing he wanted me to go on tour with him. I basically got a 30 minute slot before James and Elle came on and got to perform my own/others material to the audience and essentially warm them up.
What does landing the support slot mean to you?
It’s cool, I get to share the same stage with one of the biggest acts in the country which is a deal and it’s also an opportunity to gain some new followers and share my music with people.
How has your course helped in landing the support gig?
They really encourage you to pursue a career outside of the course and ensure that you’re as active off the course as you are on it. That encouragement definitely helped me get that slot.
After James’ Chaos and the Calm tour, what’s next for you?
We open up for an artist named Tori Kelly, then we go to Amsterdam and France with James and then I have my own mini UK tour in November!
Is there any advice would you give to other students?
Work hard, don’t be afraid to talk to your lecturers if you have problems, be as active as possible off the course as you are on it, make as many mates on different courses as possible and don’t limit yourself to just being in uni, go out and find opportunities for yourself.
Samm has also made it onto BBC Radio 1Xtra’s playlist. Listen to his music and look out for him on the music scene near you soon www.sammhenshaw.com.
