Solent Music Students Meet Industry Experts

Students from music promotion, music management, music production and music performance were recently invited to the London offices of artist manager Colin Lester.

As a Southampton Solent University Hon Doc, Colin was kind enough to invite a range of industry experts into his offices to talk to the students.

These speakers included Rob Hallet, national concert promoter; and Mike Smith, UMG/Virgin/EMI A&R director. Students also heard from Alex Fisher and Matt Dodds, representatives of JEM Artists.

Colin and his team discussed their long-standing work with Craig David and a range of other international artists, explaining the finer details of managing such high-profile acts.

Rob Hallet focused on his work within the live music sector, collaborating with artists including the Clash, Beyonce and Justin Bieber to deliver high-profile live events.

Reflecting on the afternoon, Colin said: “It was a pleasure to host the students and also invite in personal contacts and speakers from across London to pass on their expertise.”

Paul Rutter, programme leader for popular music here at Solent, thought that the event was invaluable for students:

“They gained a hugely valuable insight into the inner workings of the music industry in London, gaining first hand knowledge in a true music business environment.”
