Popular music performance and production students were treated to a workshop with session musician and bass guitarist Sam Skirrow last week.

Sam has worked with huge artists including Clean Bandit, Kelis, Raleigh Ritchie, Meghan Trainor and Martin Garrix. He visited students to give a real and approachable account of the industry, including the highs and lows of working with high-profile bands, as well as how to keep afloat as a working musician.

Sam’s visit ended with a Q&A with students who had the opportunity to ask his advice on starting out in the industry, preparing for auditions and what it’s really like to be a touring musician. Sam even shared some cheeky anecdotes of pranks that have been played on him while on stage!

We caught up with Sam and asked him a few questions about advice he would give students looking to start a career in the industry:
