Four film students have been shortlisted for an award at Birmingham Film Festival

7th November 2019

A short film that explores intolerance and hate crimes, by students from Solent University, has been nominated for the Best Student Film Award at Birmingham International Film Festival.

Oathbreaker - a medieval fantasy short film in the same genre as Game of Thrones – is an action-packed story of intrigue, betrayal, and a battle between the forces of good and evil.

Created by four BA (Hons) Film students as their Final Major Project, the film explores diversity and prejudice, set against a medieval backdrop and characters from a foreign land who are slaughtered by a corrupt state.

Talking about his experience of working on the film, editor, Peter Nelson, 21, from Marlow, says:

“We aimed to establish a fantasy world that felt it had scale beyond the short running time of our film; with characters that had a depth beyond the typical fantasy archetypes - we wanted to tell a story that left a lasting impression with the audience.

“I especially enjoyed editing our fight sequences and trying to create the sense of scale that we were looking for to establish our fantasy world.”

Alongside Peter, the production team from the BA (Hons) Film course also included Jordan Knatt (visual creator), Emma Pullen (producer) and Ryan O'Hara (cameraman), and was supervised by Senior Lecturer in Film and Television Production, Stephen Desmond.

"I am truly delighted by the success of this film and this group of students deserve enormous credit for their intelligent script and final film,” says Stephen. “Their professionalism, dedication and raw talent came through again and again at every stage. The sky is the limit for them and I will be cheering them on every step of the way."

The winners will be announced on Sunday 10 November at a glittering awards gala.

In addition to being selected for Birmingham International Film Festival, the film is enjoying widespread success and has been selected for film festivals around the world, including Florence Film Awards Monthly Competition 2019, Los Angeles Cinefest 2020 and Top Indie Film Awards 2019.
