Biography

Sports and exercise lecturer William Lawless joined Solent University after spending the last six years teaching in the 16-19 sector at Totton College and Queen Mary’s College in Hampshire. 

William is not new to the University having been part of the first cohort to graduate under the new Solent University banner in 2005. Having gained success studying the BA (Hons) Sports Studies with Business he journeyed down the M27 to completed his MSc in sports performance at the University of Portsmouth in 2007. Following this with his PGCE in post compulsory education (physical education) in 2008 also from the University of Portsmouth.

William’s most recent contact prior to working at Solent has been collaborating with Solent Sport’s High Performance Academy, developing a satellite centre at Totton College providing strength and conditioning to elite young athletes attending the college.

Being local to Southampton, William has interests including football and cricket. He is currently working towards accreditation as a strength and conditioning coach through the UKSCA and exploring potential PhD routes.

    As well as spending six years in physical education, whilst as a student at Solent, William worked as a community football coach for Southampton Football Club...
    As well as spending six years in physical education, whilst as a student at Solent William worked as a community football coach for Southampton Football Club. Over the past few years he was the high performance coach at Totton College linking in with Solent University’s High Performance Academy. During this time, he have also been the conditioning coach for Romsey and Totton Swimming Club.

    William completed his PGCE in post compulsory education at the University of Portsmouth in 2008, during which time he spent the year on placement at Queen Mary’s College in Basingstoke. In the five years prior to joining Solent William worked at Totton College in Southampton, teaching across various qualifications in the sport and physical education department. At this moment, William is level leader of the Sport, Event and Tourism Foundation Year as well as a unit leader within this course. He also delivers on the principles of coaching and fitness for sports units across the School of Sport, Health and Social Science portfolios.
  3. Research interests

    William is currently exploring potential PhD directions and have an interest in cricket, talent identification, talent development, teaching, coaching, physical literacy, strength and conditioning, anthropometry and football.
  4. Work in progress

    William is currently working on a paper looking at inclusive masculinity in English cricket.
