Andy has been involved in construction from his teenage years, initially as an apprentice thatcher, prior to joining the Royal Engineers in 1997. After several years as a plant operator mechanic, Andy moved to the technical roster. For the remainder of his career in the Army, Andy worked in a variety of roles including building and infrastructure design, project management, commercial management, facilities management and building surveying.
After leaving the Army in 2017 and a brief spell working for Interserve, Andy entered academia, initially as a unit leader at the University College of Estate Management, before becoming programme delivery manager for the Chartered Surveyor degree apprenticeship programme. A highlight of his time there was teaching Prince Charles technical drawing as part of his centenary anniversary visit.
Andy joined Solent University in March 2020. In addition to teaching at Solent University, Andy runs his own company, providing external verification services for the Chartered Institute Of Building (CIOB) Professional Review process. Andy is a member of the CIOB Southampton Hub and a primary school Governor. Andy also holds a first class honours degree in construction management from the University of Reading and is a Chartered Member of the CIOB.
Design, delivery and management of multi-trade packages covering subjects such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing and internal decoration. Delivery of CPD to colleagues on a wide variety of construction technology topics. Lead instructor in organisation for battlefield first aid.
Unit leader for construction technology and building pathology units on the Surveying Technician Diploma. Tutor for economics, cost and cost planning and tender, procurement and contracts. Deputy module leader for Level 6 work based project module.
Teaching and/or assessment on the following modules: technology of building, construction innovation, construction innovation project, civil engineering construction technology and undergraduate research project.
Trade experience includes operating a wide variety of construction plant globally, including road construction projects, camp construction and various groundworks packages. Technical experience includes designing infrastructure up to $20million, project management of contracts up to $15million and management of facilities maintenance works packages up to £750K p/a. Projects include road construction in Kosovo, camp construction in Afghanistan, tunnel repair in Gibraltar, airfield infrastructure in the UK and controlled environment refurbishment in Canada.
