Biography
Andy has been involved in construction from his teenage years, initially as an apprentice thatcher, prior to joining the Royal Engineers in 1997. After several years as a plant operator mechanic, Andy moved to the technical roster. For the remainder of his career in the Army, Andy worked in a variety of roles including building and infrastructure design, project management, commercial management, facilities management and building surveying.
After leaving the Army in 2017 and a brief spell working for Interserve, Andy entered academia, initially as a unit leader at the University College of Estate Management, before becoming programme delivery manager for the Chartered Surveyor degree apprenticeship programme. A highlight of his time there was teaching Prince Charles technical drawing as part of his centenary anniversary visit.
Andy joined Solent University in March 2020 as a senior lecturer. He was appointed acting course leader in December 2020 and permanent course leader in December 2021, taking on leadership of the HNC in Civil Engineering and BSc (Hons) in International Construction, Design and Sustainability in addition to the BSc (Hons) in Construction Management, HNC in Construction Management and HNC in Quantity Surveying.
As well as teaching across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Solent University, Andy runs his own company, providing external verification services for the Chartered Institute Of Building (CIOB) Professional Review process. Andy is an External Examiner for Birmingham City University and is a member of the impartiality committee for Control Union UK. Andy is a member of the CIOB Wessex Hub. Andy also holds a first class honours degree in construction management from the University of Reading and is a Chartered Member of the CIOB.
