Biography

Beccy joined Solent University in late 2023, following 16 years in NHS mental health services. She is a qualified mental health practitioner and cognitive behavioural therapist who teaches across the mental health nursing course and has a particular interest in delivering inclusive education that applies theory to real-life practice. Beccy's previous roles as a therapist and crisis clinician mean she has in-depth knowledge around the delivery of psychologically informed mental health care, risk management, and interdisciplinary team working.

During her time at Solent, Beccy has taken an interest in the design and development of simulation as a means of delivering informative, engaging and effective education around sensitive subjects such as suicide, trauma and migration.

As a therapist, Beccy has taken a special interest in adapting cognitive behavioural therapy for neurodivergent populations. This has influenced her teaching practice where she has worked upon a successful initiative to improve disclosure of additional learning needs for first-year students at Solent. During her time as a therapist she also specialised in treating individuals with complex trauma, latterly training in narrative exposure therapy (NET) for refugee populations -  this led to her guiding policy change around how local services engage migrant populations. Beccy continues to use this knowledge and experience, alongside liaison with Southampton and Winchester Visitors Group (SWVG), to add to public health teaching across the nursing offer.
