Biography
Donna Peberdy is Professor of Gender, Sexuality, Screen and Culture and Research Director (Research Culture). Her research focuses on sexual violence, violence against women and girls, and the role of screen media in shaping public understanding, education and social change.
Donna leads Screening Sexual Violence, a research, education and public engagement initiative developed through a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship. The Screening Sexual Violence resource is used by educators, charities and safeguarding professionals internationally and explores how film and screen media can support learning, dialogue and the prevention of sexual violence. Her work combines research, creative practice and participatory methods to engage diverse communities in conversations about gender-based violence and social change.
As Research Director (Research Culture), Donna provides cross-university strategic leadership for researcher development, research culture and environment. She is Deputy Chair of the Research Degrees, Ethics and Integrity, and Research and Innovation Committees. Externally, she is Chair of the Violence Against Women and Girls Research Network (VAWGRN), Founding Convenor of the VAWGRN Creative Practice Special Interest Group, Director of Screening Sex, and Convenor of the Screening Sex Special Interest Group of the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS).
Donna’s research has appeared in leading journals including Men & Masculinities, Transnational Screens, New Review of Film and Television Studies and the Journal of Gender-Based Violence, alongside several books and edited collections. She is Book Series Editor of the Screening Sex series for Edinburgh University Press, Festival Jury and Selection Committee Member for 16 Days 16 Films, and First Reader for the British Academy Book Prize. She was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2020 in recognition of her contribution to higher education, impact on student outcomes and influence on the teaching profession.
