Biography

In 2024, Dr Ismet Gocer was endorsed as a Global Talent by The British Academy for his outstanding contributions to research and academia. He has extensive experience in data science, data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision, with a strong background in both academia and industry.

Ismet is a postdoctoral researcher at Southampton Solent University, working on the international SEAGUARD project and focusing on its AI and machine learning components, including multimodal deep learning, advanced CNN modelling, and maritime object detection.

He has published more than 100 peer reviewed research articles, numerous book chapters, and three academic books in Econometrics (2016), Machine Learning (2024), and Computer Vision (2025). His scholarly impact includes 2,950 citations, an h-index of 30, and an i10-index of 65.

Ismet has over 30 years of teaching and research experience across Turkey, Hungary, and the UK. He has taught bachelors, master’s and PhD students in econometrics, statistics, mathematics, data analytics, machine learning, CNNs and computer vision. He also supervised postgraduate theses, served on doctoral jury panels, and contributed to curriculum development as a deputy head of department and university education committee member.

His research interests span econometrics, macroeconomics, productivity, innovation, R&D, high technology exports, foreign direct investment, Fourier-based time series, machine learning, deep learning, NLP, LLMs, and multimodal AI. Across academia and industry, he has delivered impactful work, including advanced CNN and YOLO-based computer vision systems, digital monitoring tools for turbine crack detection, and the application of Fourier econometrics and NLP to Brexit-related uncertainty.
