Biography

James is the course leader for Solent's music industry degree courses. He lectures on several modules, also tutoring final year students on their individual and group projects.

From 2008-2015, James was responsible for the grants programme at PRS Foundation (PRSF), an organisation that supports emerging artists and music businesses.

Whilst at PRSF, James acted as project manager for the New Music 20x12 programme, part of the official Cultural Olympiad at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

James has also achieved success as a musician, providing official remixes for six Top 40 singles and releasing two critically acclaimed studio albums. His music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 1, Classic FM, BBC 1 and Channel 4.

He has written articles for the BBC website, Beatport, Muzik, The Fly and the Clore Cultural Leadership Programme.

James has held external advisor positions with organisations including Nokia (expert tester), Welsh National Opera and Birmingham Symphony Hall (Jazzlines). He has been a lead assessor for the BBC Performing Arts Fund, also working in partnership with the British Council, Glastonbury Festival, National Film & Television School and MOBO.

James is an active researcher, specialising in music funding and education. His contribution to the music industry has been recognised by the Royal Society of the Arts, who invited him to become a fellow in 2014.
