James is a Registered Nurse in mental health, having qualified with a first-class honours degree in 2009 from the University of Southampton.
He has experience working as a nurse, as well as experience working in therapies following additional training to become a cognitive behaviour therapist (psychotherapist).
Having gained significant clinical experience and a passion for education and teaching during his various roles as a mentor, a supervisor, a course facilitator, and supporting the practice of students and junior staff, James joined Solent University to be a part of developing the therapy and mental health team within student experience as a psychotherapist. He began this role in 2018 and during this time thrived in the dynamic university environment, and was keen to be a part of its future development.
In January 2021, James became a lecturer at Solent University, working across various nursing and health professional teams, including adult nursing, health play specialists, nursing associates/health care assistant practitioners, and, most recently, in mental health nursing as a senior lecturer. I has held many roles, including level lead, module lead and lead for apprentices. James maintains a pastoral role and is a champion and supporter for mental health, neurodiversity, student support, and student experience, He is a buddy (supervisor) to new staff and undertakes an administrative role. He is involved in writing and developing new modules, designing and delivering various appropriate teaching and learning materials, and leading seminar groups across many different modules.
James is keen on reflective practice and will often promote the importance of feedback from his peers, students, and from module surveys to develop his own teaching practice for the benefit of the student experience. He also provides timely, constructive, formative and comprehensive feedback to students using different forms of communication to promote their learning and improve their performance. As part of is role as a module lead, he has participated in the examination and assessment processes. He continues to work with the wider team to contribute to the validation and accreditation of courses and quality assurance.
He has full accreditation with the BABCP, in addition to being registered with the NMC. He maintains CPD for both these registrations.
James' research focuses on reflective practice as a mechanism for enhancing personal, academic, and professional development within healthcare education. His interests include the student experience and wellbeing, the development of reflective and critical-thinking capabilities, and the identification of effective educational approaches that support learner success. He is particularly interested in understanding how problem-solving and reflective processes can help individuals navigate challenges, overcome barriers, and achieve their academic and professional potential.
