Biography
Mikaela originally hails from Yucca Valley, California. Following her graduation from La Serna High School in Whittier, she worked for a short time as a laboratory assistant at Southern California University.
In 2018, Mikaela moved to the UK to study an Integrated Master’s in Molecular Cell Biology at the University of York. Her master’s project was supervised by Dr Angela Hodge and investigated the influence of different species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the volatile profiles of broad bean plants using GCMS.
Following her graduation, Mikaela worked at the Food Environment Research Agency, in Sand Hutton, York. As part of the Pesticides team, her work tested food for pesticide residues using GCMS and LCMS.
She now works as the technician instructor for the Biomedical Science program at Solent. In addition to maintaining the lab, she also teaches on the Biology of Disease and Molecular Biology modules and is a level leader for the current Level 4 students.
Further information
Mikaela’s research interests centre around the intersection of food, microbes, and human health. She has a particular interest in the microbiome and the role this can play in disease/dysbiosis. Another recent interest has been the impact of PFAS and microplastics on human cells.
