Biography

Dr Tahir Hassan is a senior lecturer in artificial intelligence and data science at Solent University. He is an innovative academic with a strong interdisciplinary foundation in artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and mathematics. His research specialises in fairness-aware AI, deep learning, and mathematical optimisation, with high-impact applications in medical imaging and healthcare.

Prior to joining Solent, Tahir was a visiting researcher and postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP), University of Surrey. There, he played a key role in the EPSRC-funded People-Centred Mammogram Analysis (PecMan) project. He led the pre-processing of the OPTIMAM dataset and developed fairness-aware knowledge distillation frameworks to improve diagnostic equity.

Tahir holds a PhD in Computing and an MSc by Research in Mathematics and Computation from the University of Buckingham. His background is deeply rooted in mathematics, allowing him to advocate for explainable and mathematically grounded AI systems. His teaching philosophy is student-centred and practice-driven, emphasising real-world coding skills to prepare students for the evolving tech landscape.
