Toby Bishop, Course Leader

Toby Bishop

Course Leader

Toby has been teaching engineering science subjects for over 28 years. His own educational background is a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and his first teaching post was as an MoD employee teaching aerodynamics, aeronautics, mechanics and thermodynamics to Royal Naval Air Engineering artificers. He also ran the wind tunnel laboratory where he developed a range of test and demonstration equipment, including designing and building a new wind tunnel.

Since joining Warsash Maritime School at Solent University in 2008, Toby has continued teaching mechanics and thermodynamics, but now to Merchant Navy marine engineering cadets and senior officers. He has been the marine engineering cadetship course leader for the last eight years.

Toby is on several UK examination panels (SQA/MCA) that help to ensure academic standards are correct for seafarer candidates taking international exams for promotion.

Toby has a wide-ranging interest in all elements of engineering and science and has his own well-equipped engineering workshop at home where he can 'play' and learn from his mistakes. As part of this he is a member of a local model engineering society where he helps with the safe operation of a passenger-carrying small railway. He is restoring a steam locomotive and designing/building a petrol-engined locomotive with electric transmission, both of which will operate on the society’s 5-inch gauge tracks to pull passenger carriages.
