Tap into the Library's expertise

The Mountbatten Library has always played a central role in Solent’s success. Popular with students, responsive to their needs and a holder of Customer Service Excellence, it might seem it has achieved all it needs to.

However, this success comes down to the people working in the library and the expertise they offer.

The Information Librarians are a key means of support for the whole academic community. They can be contacted in person, via email or through the subject LibGuides in SOL. There is one for each School, and they can help your students find the best sources, evaluate them, and explore the weather of information available – all via workshops, lectures and videos.

Perhaps you haven’t come across the LibGuides. They provide interactive subject-based support with quizzes and interactive tutorials so students can revisit the skills they want to develop, or test how much they know and build on areas they might want to strengthen. The Information Librarians include links to the best online resources, and update these regularly.

No doubt at some point your students have questions about referencing. The Information Librarians organise drop-in sessions, online support, 1-2-1 appointments, or workshops. They can cover the whole process, from source, to writing, to final reference list.

The Information Librarians encourage students to do this through play, quizzes and good old practice!

Students can also get introduced to RefWorks if they want to move on to storing reference data and content in an online tool – and then use it to accurately generate their reference lists.

Of course you might expect a university library to provide plenty of support for the students. But what about support for academics?

The library takes its support for researchers seriously, and the Information Librarians can help you develop your own research skills and stay current with the best resources available for your subject area.  Or if you want to get to grips with the murky world of metrics, they will do their best to help.

If you’re interested and would like to know more, please get in touch. If there’s something we haven’t thought of, then come and talk to us and we will take it from there.
