1856: A private School of Art is founded in Portland Terrace, Southampton.

1932: A public School of Navigation is established as part of Southampton University College.

1943: A Junior Technical School for Building opens helping bomb-shattered Southampton rebuild.
1946: A School of Bakery opens in a former Emergency Feeding Centre in Swaythling.
1946: The School of Navigation moves to Warsash.
1951: Southampton College of Technology officially forms bringing together building, bakery, pre-nursing and other disciplines.

1964: First building at East Park Terrace. Southampton College of Technology's first building is constructed at East Park Terrace.

1969: The Technical College (now Southampton City College) separates from the College of Technology.
1973: The College of Art moves to premises on East Park Terrace, next to the College of Technology.
1978: The Colleges Art and Technology merge to form Southampton College of Higher Education.
1984: Southampton Institute is born. The School of Navigation at Warsash merges with Southampton College of Higher Education, which is renamed Southampton Institute of Higher Education.
1989: The Institute becomes independent. Southampton Institute becomes independent and begins rapid expansion in courses, campus, facilities and student numbers.

1993-1996: Student residences open. Five new halls of student residence open in Southampton.

1994: The Library opens. The Mountbatten Library and Sir James Matthews building open.

1998: Michael Andrews opens. The Michael Andrews building on EPT is opened by HRH the Princess Royal.

2004: Degree-awarding powers. Southampton Institute awarded degree-awarding powers.
2005: University status granted. Southampton Institute becomes Southampton Solent University.
2006: Our first Chancellor is appointed. Sir Alan West, now Lord West, becomes the first Chancellor of Southampton Solent University.
2011: Campus investments. The University invests in significant project to improve campus, including the flagship Spark building.

2011: Solent Showcase. A new gallery, Solent Showcase, opens in the Sir James Matthews building.

Timsbury Lake opens. A new ship handling centre opens at Timsbury Lake, one of just a handful in the UK.

2015: Saints FC partnership begins. Solent University becomes official university partner of Southampton FC.

2015: THE Most Improved Student Experience award. Solent wins Times Higher Education's Most Improved Student Experience award.

2016: The Spark: The Spark building is completed.

2018: Theo Paphitis becomes Chancellor.

2019: Maritime sim centre opens on EPT. At launch, the UK's largest and most sophisticated maritime simulation centre.

2019: Sports complex completed. The Sports Complex opens on EPT, combining specialist facilities and a public gym.

2019: Solent shortlisted for the THE Uni of the Year award. The University is praised for its innovative curriculum review, student satisfaction, teaching excellence, and graduate employment.

2020: Coats of arms unveiled. Solent is granted a formal Coat of Arms, in recognition of our status and our long history of excellence.

2020: Launch of Law and Business Schools.
2021: The Civic Charter is established demonstrating our commitment to working with communities and organisation in Southampton and beyond.
2022: Specialist research centres launched. Including the Centre for Marine Sustainability and the Warsash Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships Research Centre.
2022: Institute of Technology partnership. Solent leads a group of education partners, securing government funding to enhance training education across maritime, engineering and digital technologies.
2022: Enhanced investment in creative facilities. New custom-built facilities for our art, design, fashion, and architecture courses on East Park Terrace.

2023: TEF Gold achieved. The University is rated triple-Gold in the government's latest Teaching Excellence Framework, praised for outstanding teaching and our supportive learning environment.
