We are delighted to welcome you to Solent’s Sport Conference 2023. The conference will focus on the future of sport, showcasing new technologies and hearing from those pushing the boundaries within the industry.

You'll learn about the latest trends and developments in our field, gain insights into best practices, and discover new approaches to problem-solving.

Why you should attend

The conference will be a great opportunity for you to meet other people who are passionate about sports, including coaches, athletes, industry leaders, and fellow enthusiasts. You can make new connections, build relationships, and potentially find new opportunities for collaboration or employment.

Hear from inspirational and thought-provoking speakers, hear from successful athletes, scientists, coaches, and other working in the industry. Learn about ground-breaking research and innovation, and connect with others who share your enthusiasm.

Schools and colleges

We're delighted to welcome students from schools and colleges from the local community to this event for the earlier session. We hope the talks and activities we have lined up will inspire young learners to consider a career in the industry.

  • 12.15pm: Arrival.
  • 12.30pm: Intro talk
  • 1pm: Tour of sports facilities
  • 1.30pm: Conference fair.
  • 2pm: Colleges round table - Hear from a range of individuals working within the industry.
  • 2.45pm: Conference fair.
  • 3.15pm: Departure.

Main conference

The main conference is for Solent students, allowing opportunities to hear from expert speakers in the field of sports science, as well as network with individuals and organisations from industry. The conference is rounded off with a talk from legendary football manager, Harry Redknapp.

We have a number of activities throughout the afternoon - check the timings on the right to make sure you don't miss out.

  • 4.40pm: Dr Hannah Stoyel - The Olympic mind
  • 5.20pm: Jo Clubb - The future of sports science

  • 6.45pm: An evening with Harry Redknapp.
  • 8pm: Conference close.

Guest speaker: Dr Javid Farahani

Javid is an entrepreneur who specialises in cognitive assessment and enhancement in the areas of elite performance, education and business. He has published four scientific papers in Progress in Brain Research on the application of neuroscience research in real-world problems.

Javid has served on the FA Talent Identification and Development Department and UCL Innovation Hub. He holds a PhD in Applied Cognitive Neuroscience from UCL.

Dr Javid Farahani

Guest speaker: Dr Hannah Stoyel

Hannah is an HCPC registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist and a Chartered member of the British Psychological Society. Beyond her private practice at Optimise Potential, Hannah is a sport psychologist for the English Institute of Sport (EIS) working with British Diving. Hannah also works across aquatic sport working for many years as the also lead sport psychologist for Swim England's talent pathway and currently works with World Class Programme swimmers funded by British Swimming.

Hannah is also the sport psychologist for League 1's Oxford United FC men's first team and is a British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) registered practitioner. She uses an integrative approach with an emphasis on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance Commitment Therapy.

Hannah has a PhD from University College London (UCL) in Clinical Sport Psychology. Her PhD research focussed on disordered eating and eating disorders in athletes. She has a BA in Psychology from Kenyon College in the US, and an MSc in Applied Sport Psychology from St Mary's University Twickenham.

Guest speaker: Jo Clubb

Jo Clubb is an international sports science consultant. Her company, Global Performance Insights provides sports science support to teams, companies, and individuals around the world. Previously, she worked as an applied sports scientist for the Buffalo Bills in the NFL and Buffalo Sabres in the NHL, as well as Chelsea Football Club and Brighton and Hove Albion in English football. She shares sports science education through her blog and YouTube channel, as well as scientific publications and textbooks.

Jo Clubb

Guest speaker: Harry Redknapp

Harry Redknapp was born in 1947 in Poplar, East London. After starting out as a trainee at Tottenham, he signed for West Ham and played for them between 1965 and 1972. He also played for Bournemouth and the Seattle Sounders before injury took him into management and coaching. He has managed at Bournemouth, West Ham, Portsmouth (twice), Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and QPR. He won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008 and took Spurs into the Champions League in 2010. In 2018, Harry was crowned King of the Jungle in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here. He has written three bestselling books: his autobiography Always Managing, which was number one in the Sunday Times, his history of the game in A Man Walks On To a Pitch and his survival guide to the world’s hardest job in It Shouldn’t Happen to a Manager.

Great Britain Speedway Team

The Great Britain Speedway Team is the National team of British Speedway. To make Great Britain the most successful and most professional national speedway team on the planet, the Great Britain Speedway Team has developed and launched its Tracking Success Programme, incorporating sports science experts, rider coaches, tactical analysts and branding specialists. The Team consists of people who are not only experts in their chosen field, but who are also passionate about elevating GB to the very top - with a long-term vision in place: the goal of Great Britain regularly producing elite-level athletes who can compete on the World stage.

In addition to its senior team, Great Britain have implemented a solid foundation with the launch of the GB Academy, embracing young athletes from the age of 15, steering them through their development and into the Under 21 squad, creating a clear pathway for British Speedway athletes to reach the very top.

Mind-Body Connections research group

The Mind-Body Connections research group exists to gain a greater understanding of the interrelationship between the cognitive and physiological processes, and human behaviour. Mind-body connections is a dynamic and complex topic of interest that often requires a multidisciplinary approach. As such, our team of experts often work collaboratively to understand human function and the affect it has on our behaviour. Our research group contains experts within the following fields:

  • Health and exercise psychology
  • Nursing
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychophysiology
  • Biomechanics

Ash Buckman - performance coach for HiTech GP

Ash works as a performance coach within motorsport for Hitech GP across all their racing series. Working with drivers from Formula 2 all the way down to karting, he supports them from a sports medicine aspect to ensure they're physically capable to maximise the most out of their own and the car's performance.

Rebecca Marshall - Coaching Coordinator, Motorsport UK

Rebecca is a coordinator for the Coaching Pathway at Motorsport UK. Within this role she is responsible for the development of coaches within motorsport; supporting driver coaches and support coaches to enhance, progress or even start their career in coaching motorsports.

She is also a performance coach for Hitech GP, supporting drivers within Formula 4. Within this role she ensures the drivers are physically prepared prior to getting in their car so they can maximize their performance potential.

Rebecca Marshall

Virtual reality

Dr Russell Discombe and undergraduate student Harry Saunders will be leading an interactive demonstration of how virtual reality technology can be used with sport psychology research.
