About the course

Our pre-sessional English courses are designed to help students from around the world to improve their academic and English language skills before starting undergraduate or postgraduate degree studies.

The courses will help you to achieve the language entry requirements for your undergraduate or postgraduate degree, improving your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. With a focus on academic skills and language, the course is designed to help you prepare for the University's English language test. You will take this test in the final week of your pre-sessional course.

Our English courses are delivered in partnership with QA Higher Education and are designed for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate showing your attendance and notification of your results.

Together with the students who join us from countries and cultures around the world, we aim to create a lively and friendly atmosphere. Typical classes contain between 9 and 18 students.

Who is this course for?

Solent University’s pre-sessional English language course is aimed at international students who wish to improve their written and spoken English, as well as reading and listening, before they come to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level in the UK.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2019/20 academic year are:

15 week course (starts 27 May 2019): £4,500

10 week course (starts 1 July 2019): £3,000 

5 week course (starts 5 August): £1,500

Fees for both courses include tuition, books and test fees.

Course content

Solent approved English Language test preparation

Prepares you for the Solent approved English language test by improving your language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

English language skills

Improves your overall fluency and accuracy in the four language skills.

Academic study skills

Develops the skills you require in academic work: effective listening, reading and note-taking, research skills, academic writing, presentation and communication.

Tutorial

An opportunity to discuss progress or any issues with your tutor.

Support

Web-based learning

Solent's virtual learning environment provides quick online access to assignments, lecture notes, suggested reading and other course information.

The Student Hub

The Student Hub is a central space where you can access all of the information and support you need during your time at University.

Professional and experienced staff can help resolve any query, and if they cannot answer the question themselves they will find the person who can.
