Got a goal or two you want to meet this year? Wondering how to stick to them? Southampton Solent University's experts are here to help.
We've all done it - set ourselves fitness goals at the start of a new year and then found ourselves neglecting them as other priorities creep up on us. It's important not to feel guilty: fitness, like everything else in our lives, is all about finding a healthy balance that works for you.
At Solent University, we've got a whole host of experts in sport who have shared their tips for sticking to a fitness goal, whatever that might be. So, if you're looking for a boost to help you reach your goals, read on to hear what they have to say.
You might not be able to change the content of a pre-set workout programme or cancel an appointment that gets in the way of a set time to exercise, but you can choose to focus on that which is in your hands instead.
Lecturer in Sport Psychology, Dr Tom Doncom, says, "You can't change the weather, but you can motivate yourself to achieve with maximum effort and seize the opportunity! Don't waste your energy on those things that are uncontrollable!"
If something gets in the way of your plan, don't let it get you down! Take back control by focusing on that which is in your power.
While you can't always guarantee that a friend or family member - maybe even a colleague or neighbour - will be free to exercise with you, it can help to have a work-out partner.
Why does working out with someone else help us stick to a plan? Lecturer in Sport, Health and Fitness, Kevin Busuttil, says, "Evidence suggests that we are psychologically, and from a behavioural standpoint, more inclined to turn up for a session so as not to let our partner down."
It may sound simple, but it's an accountability tool that works. And it's a great way to socialise while doing something that isn't always easy to stick to.
Getting into a rhythm with fitness is one of the keys to success. Life throws its curve balls, we know, but if you can outline a routine that works for you and stick to it, you're more likely to reach those exercise goals.
"Routine is key," says Dr Kola Adeosun, Solent's Senior Lecturer in Sport Education. "Prioritise discipline over motivation. I have certain things I do - like running every Monday and on the first day of every month."
If it works for the experts, it could just work for you too!
Having a big event or fitness goal to reach is a great way to hold yourself accountable. It's not about feeling guilty if you don't get every workout in, it's about building up to something that will make you feel great once it's done.
This is important for Sport Coaching Lecturer, Sylvain Donneaud: "I need a challenge, something that motivates me, keeps me on track - and maybe even scares me a little.
"If I don't stick to a plan, it'll be a nightmare!"
