Award winning photographer inspires students

18 February 2026

Southampton Solent University recently welcomed back alumnus and award-winning photographer James Cannon to campus, where he shared his career journey and industry insights with current photography students.

James, who has twice won the prestigious Portrait of Britain award, returned to the University to discuss his professional experiences and latest creative projects. His most recent work includes a short film created in collaboration with Football Beyond Boundaries, exploring the powerful theme of young boys finding their voices through sport.

Students on Solent’s photography course benefit from strong industry links with organisations such as the Association of Photographers and ‘a space’ arts in Southampton. However, hearing directly from a successful graduate who has transformed his university experience into a flourishing career proved particularly motivating.

Ines Roliz, a photography student, said: “James' talk was great as he is one of my inspirations to work in sports photography. His talk helped me understand how the photography industry works and what to do to get into it; keep working, share your projects and work on your future connections.”

Joel Hazelwood added: “It was really interesting getting to hear the point of view from a past Solent graduate who has made a name for himself. I found his message about making the passion project, even if it’s just for you, very inspiring and it gave me a positive outlook for my own future post-university.”

Solent photography students have previously benefited from talks by notable figures including Richard Billingham, Catherine Yass, Charlotte Cotton, Ori Gersht, Brian Dillon, Peter Fraser, Dan Holdsworth and Chrystel Lebas. These guest lectures form part of the University’s commitment to practice-led education, ensuring students gain first-hand insight from leading professionals across the field.

Nina Sverdvik, Photography Course Leader at Southampton Solent University, said:

“It is always a privilege to welcome our graduates back to share their experiences. James’ success demonstrates what can be achieved with dedication, creativity and resilience. Giving our students access to professionals who are actively shaping the industry is central to how we prepare them for their own careers.”

In recent years, graduates from Solent’s photography course have progressed into careers across commercial, editorial, fashion, portrait, documentary, photojournalism, landscape and fine art photography. Like others across the university, the course continues to foster industry-ready graduates through its strong professional networks, hands-on learning approach and emphasis on real-world experience.
