Theatre director, Kerry Kyriacos Michael MBE has become an Honorary Fellow at Southampton Solent University.
Awarded on Friday 11 July, during Solent’s 2025 graduation ceremonies, Kerry’s Honorary Fellowship recognises the theatre maker’s inspiring achievements in the arts. A second-generation North London Cypriot, diversity and inclusion have been at the heart of Kerry’s work across the last two decades.
An influential figure in the arts, in 2024 students from Solent’s Department of Art and Music had the opportunity to work with Kerry during Home Theatre Southampton. This unique approach to theatre saw students participate in bespoke performances in people's homes, learning from some of the very best practitioners in the performing arts.
On becoming an Honorary Fellow, Kerry says, “This is a great honour and I’m extremely grateful to be recognised in this way. When working with Solent University I found an exciting energy, full of optimism and possibility; and I’m very happy to be now associated with this institution.”
From 2004 to 2017, Kerry served as Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Theatre Royal Stratford East. At the time of his appointment, Kerry was just 34 years old – making him the youngest person to lead a major theatre in England. Among many achievements and accolades during this period was an Olivier nomination for his production of Cinderella, which marked the first time a pantomime had been nominated in the awards’ history.
Kerry has won numerous awards, including two Olivier’s. In 2018, he became an MBE for his service to the arts. He continues to make theatre, film and television, while advocating for inclusion and diversity in the creative industries.
As an Honorary Fellow at Solent University, Kerry has become a lifelong role model to students and graduates pursuing meaningful careers in the arts.
