Millie Payne, a BA (Hons) Sports Journalism graduate who applied to Southampton Solent University through Clearing and is now thriving as a broadcaster and producer, credits the alternative route to higher education.
Now a successful freelance journalist who works for the BBC, Millie never planned to go to university. "I'd previously applied for an apprenticeship, and I was broken when I didn't get it," she says.
"I had nothing else lined up, so I felt quite lost with what I was going to do with my life." Having previously looked into Solent University's sports journalism course, Millie was drawn to the practice-led nature of it.
Because Millie chose to apply to Solent past the UCAS deadline, she had to go through Clearing - an alternative and accessible pathway to university for thousands of students each year. "I eventually decided that I should just take the leap and go to university, and at that point Clearing was my only option. But it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made."
Millie lived at home while studying at Solent - a decision which didn't detract from her time at university. She credits the working industry professionals who teach on sports journalism, the facilities and equipment: "It was a very easy and hands-on learning experience."
A freelance reporter and producer, Millie works on the sports desk at BBC South and leads on the coverage of women's football in the region. Her time at Solent prepared her for opportunities like these:
"I think the emphasis on the practical aspects of my course, and the fact that it's BJTC (Broadcast Journalism Training Council) accredited really stands out to any potential employers. The fact that we already know how to operate in a professional newsroom environment, use industry equipment, and have been taught by industry pros really stands you in good stead."
Millie's Clearing experience was so simple and smooth, that the details of it are no longer at the forefront of her university journey. And if someone is thinking of applying to Solent through this route? "Just do it," she says.
"It turned out to be the best few years of my life. So if you're thinking about it, I'd just bite the bullet!"
