
‘a space’ arts co-founder becomes honorary fellow at Solent

Philip Cotton, Southampton Solent University’s former Chair of the Board of Governors, has become an honorary Doctor of the University.
Phil accepted this honour on Tuesday 8 July, following his retirement in 2024 from Solent’s Board of Governors after seven years of dedicated service. In total, Phil spent nine years serving the University in various roles, including as an independent governor and as Chair of the Governance Committee.
Outside of Phil’s role at Solent, he spent 36 years with KPMG, a leading professional services firm. During his time with the company, Phil held a series of leadership roles and worked with clients both in the UK and abroad.
Phil’s appointment as an honorary Doctor of the University recognises his dedication to Solent and its learning community. While Chair of the Board of Governors, he led with an unwavering commitment to the University and its mission. On receiving this honour, Phil says:
“Being part of Solent has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my life. To now receive this honour from a university I care so deeply about is truly special. Thank you — this means a very great deal to me.”
As an essential member of the Solent community, Phil had an influential and far-reaching impact. Valuing inclusion and openness, Phil’s contribution to Southampton Solent University will continue to have an impact long into the future. Now, as an honorary Doctor of the University, he remains a permanent member of the community.
