Southampton Solent University is celebrating the determination and resilience of Sport Excellence Programme athlete Rob Bittles, who has successfully returned to archery following a year marked by significant health challenges.
Rob, who is studying Cyber Security and is in his second year on the University’s Sport Excellence Programme, saw his training, competitions and studies disrupted after suffering a number of unexpected seizures. Despite these setbacks, he has shown exceptional commitment to his recovery, working tirelessly to rebuild his health and fitness while continuing his academic journey.
Throughout the year, Rob has worked closely with the Sport Excellence Programme team, who have provided tailored support to aid his rehabilitation and return to sport. This included a bespoke strength and conditioning and rehabilitation programme delivered by the University’s strength and conditioning coach, Jon Cooper, and sports therapist, Steph Lazarczuk.
Recognising the importance of maintaining all aspects of athletic development during recovery, Rob also previously received sport psychology support from sport lecturer Tom Doncom. This enabled him to continue developing his mental performance skills even when he was unable to take part in archery physically.
Alongside this, Rob met weekly with athlete support officer Kelly Simm to help him navigate both the academic and personal challenges that arose during his recovery. Working closely with Rob’s course leader, lecturers and teams across the Student Hub, Kelly has helped to coordinate appropriate academic support and explore funding opportunities to ensure Rob could continue progressing in his studies.
Rob’s successful return to archery is a testament not only to his perseverance and positive mindset, but also to the collaborative approach taken by staff across the University to support student-athletes facing significant challenges. He said:
“Having my training, competitions and studies disrupted by my health has been incredibly challenging, but the support I’ve received from the Sport Excellence Programme and staff across the University has been amazing. They’ve helped me stay focused on my recovery, keep progressing academically and maintain a positive mindset. Being back in archery again makes all the hard work worthwhile, and I’m excited to see what I can achieve moving forward.”
Kelly Simm, Athlete Support Officer for the Sport Excellence Programme, said:
"We are incredibly proud of Rob and the dedication and resilience he has shown throughout this year. Dealing with setbacks is never easy, particularly when they affect both your university studies and your sporting career. Despite the additional challenges he has faced, he has been a constant presence in the gym and has worked closely with me week after week as we've navigated the different support processes together. His determination has been inspiring, and we can't wait to see him back competing very soon."
As a member of the Archery GB National Pathway, Rob continues to pursue his ambitions in the sport, and his journey over the past year stands as an inspiring example of resilience, determination and the value of holistic athlete support.
