Sports and Exercise Therapy students support BBC’s Children in Need bid

6 November 2025

Nine Sports and Exercise Therapy students from Southampton Solent University have been putting their skills into action by providing expert support to BBC presenters taking part in this year’s Children in Need fundraising activities.

As part of the annual appeal, students supported presenters from BBC Solent, BBC Wiltshire, and BBC Sussex and Surrey who took on the challenge of completing a series of three-legged walks across 4–5 November, covering a total of 25 miles over two days. Throughout the event, Solent students were on hand to deliver professional advice and care, ensuring participants could take on the challenge safely and effectively.

The students provided a range of support, including first aid, injury management, and rehabilitation advice for presenters with pre-existing conditions. Their involvement offered valuable hands-on experience while contributing to an important national cause.

Callum Edlin, one of the students involved, said:

“I loved putting into practice some of the skills I’ve gained from my course, especially for such a worthy cause. Thank you to the BBC for inviting us to be part of this, it was a great opportunity and experience.”

Dr Lynsey Northeast, Course Lead for Sports and Exercise Therapy at Solent University, added:

“We’re extremely proud of our students’ professionalism and dedication. Opportunities like this reflect the real-world experience that our course provides and demonstrate the impact our students can make beyond the classroom.”

Solent University’s BSc (Hons) Sports and Exercise Therapy course is accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists (SST), who helped to organise the students’ participation in the BBC’s activity. The course offers students access to industry placements, scholarships, and exclusive resources, including professional insurance coverage for work-based learning.

Students gain valuable experience through placements with some of the UK’s leading sports teams and organisations, giving them a competitive edge before graduation.

The University’s state-of-the-art sports complex further enhances learning and practical training, featuring two sports halls, dedicated strength and conditioning and teaching gyms, and a specialist sport and exercise therapy floor with three bespoke clinic spaces. These facilities provide an authentic environment where students treat athletes and clients under the supervision of experienced professionals.
