Students from Southampton Solent University played a key role in supporting runners at last weekend’s Winchester 10k, providing hands-on treatment and injury advice to more than 1,500 participants.
The popular road race, organised by Challenging Events, began at the historic Winchester Guildhall, drawing runners of all abilities to the city centre for the annual event.
Sports and Exercise Therapy students from Solent were stationed at the finish line, where they delivered post-race sports massages to help aid recovery. The team also carried out injury assessments for runners requiring further support, offering practical advice and immediate care.
The opportunity forms part of the University’s ongoing partnership with Challenging Events, which enables students to gain valuable, practice-led experience in real-world environments. By working directly with members of the public at large-scale sporting events, students are able to apply the skills and theoretical knowledge developed during their studies.
Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Therapy, Mark Greaves-Lord, accompanied the students on the day, and said:
“It was fantastic to see our students supporting putting their skills to use at such a well attended event.”
“These experiences are invaluable in building their confidence, professionalism and practical competence. We’re proud of the way they represented the University and delivered high-quality care to participants on the day.”
Solent University’s Sports and Exercise Therapy course is accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists, ensuring students meet nationally recognised professional standards. The accreditation also provides access to industry placements, scholarships, job opportunities and resources, including insurance coverage for work-based learning.
Students studying sports-related courses at Solent also benefit from access to the University’s state-of-the-art sports complex. The facility features two sports halls, dedicated strength and conditioning and teaching gyms, and a specialised sport and exercise therapy floor. The therapy floor includes three bespoke clinic spaces, offering an ideal setting for students to refine their practical skills while treating athletes and clients under the supervision of experienced faculty members.
