Derek Boshier was today, Thursday 07 October, awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Arts from Solent University, Southampton, in recognition of his contribution to the art industry.

Springing originally from the British Pop Art movement while he was a student at the Royal College of Art in London, Derek worked amongst peers such as David Hockney, RB Kitaj, Allen Jones and Pauline Boty. These artworks began his whole career in his engagement with popular culture and has continued ever since. Derek has made works for music groups including David Bowie, and The Clash.

Derek is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and an Honorary Fellow Royal College of Art.

Commenting on his award, Derek says: “The Doctorate is a great personal honour of course but beyond that it might brings attention to the creative arts. Unfortunately the creative arts have been down graded in our education curriculum. Creativity in education should not be limited to the creative arts but is equally applicable to business and science."
