Freshers Fairtrade Fayre!

Fairtrade food products were centre stage at Southampton Solent University’s Freshers’ Fayre, with hundreds of freshers learning about the positive impact ethically produced goods have in the UK and beyond.

The new students jumped at the chance to show their support by donning the Fairtrade Foundation banana suit, with many choosing to share a special ‘selfie’ on social media. A raffle to win a hamper full of Fairtrade goodies also received a phenomenal response, with over 300 students taking part.

The Solent SU staff ensured that the raffle winner wasn’t the only one getting some free food, and all visitors to the Fairtrade Foundation stand got the chance to taste-test some freshly cooked Fairtrade brownies.

Helping students to learn about the importance of developing worldwide farming communities (and protecting the environment in which these communities live and work) is central to Solent Student Union’s mission to get more of us eating Fairtrade products. Working closely with the Solent’s catering supplier Sodexo, the University invests in the promotion of Fairtrade across all catering outlets and engages with students regularly throughout the year.

Part of this regular engagement is the newly developed Fairtrade directory, which was produced by University to encourage staff and students to look for the Fairtrade ‘mark’ on both the campus and the High Street.

The Freshers Fayre, organised by Solent Students’ Union, saw crowds of new students from around the world come together to learn more about their new city, community and University.
