Solent’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mike Wilkinson, welcomed a fantastic audience earlier this week for his professorial lecture, ‘Aromatics, automotive, aspire and ambiguity’.

Joining Solent in August 2010 as a professor of international education, Mike brought with him a wealth of knowledge regarding widening participation in higher education and has developed partnerships with institutions in China, such as the Shanghai Institute of Technology.

Professor Mike Wilkinson walked guests through his academic career and professional history, from completing his PhD in organic chemistry in 1978, to the creation of Tempro20, a solution to coat and protect the paintwork on cars.

Exploring each phase of his career, and each of his major research projects, Mike shared stories about successes and key relationships with colleagues he met along the way. The professorial marks the end of Mike’s career, as he is due to retire later this month.

Mike says, “It’s been a privilege to work at Southampton Solent University for the past eight years. I have worked on a variety of projects from enhancing the University’s interaction with external organisations, to the ongoing campus development.

“I’ve had a fantastic career, and wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me over the years.”
