With the theme of university scientific research, innovation and entrepreneurship education, Solent was one of four British institutions to host the leadership development body that operates under the authority of the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Twenty five delegates from across 24 Chinese universities and institutions attended the five-day programme that included lectures, workshops and interactive sessions organised by Solent.

Topics, which had a focus on university and industry co-operation, included:

  • Smartphone-based virtual reality maritime education and training
  • University and industry co-operation in football
  • Entrepreneurship education in the arts
  • Higher degree apprenticeships and business engagement
  • The myths and facts around research-informed teaching
  • How CELTs support learning and teaching in UK higher education
  • Employability self evaluation and the Solent capital compass: a diagnostic tool to develop confident, job-ready students.

The final morning of the programme featured presentations from the Vice Presidents of Northwest Normal University and Hainan University.  They discussed reforms to teacher training in the Chinese education system and models for international collaboration to an audience of Solent staff and the Chinese Association of Southampton.

Friday morning also included an address from delegation leader Mr Huang Xingsheng, Deputy Director of the General Office of the Chinese Ministry of Education.  Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Huang remarked: “The Chinese government now places great importance on the global exchange of education.

“We’re in a very vibrant and changing time, and a lot of countries now see the value of higher education in poverty alleviation, mitigating the gaps between the poor and the rich, and in solving conflicts.

“I believe this trip will have a lasting impact on everyone here this week, and I think we will apply most of what we’ve learned here in our future work.”

Professor Graham Baldwin, Vice-Chancellor, says: "We were delighted to welcome a delegation from the National Academy of Education Administration for their fifth visit.

“It was a valuable opportunity for focused discussions around university and industry cooperation, and a chance for Solent to share its progress and best practice around this key University priority."
