Third year BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism students got the scoop on a career in magazines earlier this week, after attending a guest lecture with Darren Styles, managing director of Stream Publishing, which publishes the world-leading LGBT magazine Attitude.

Darren discussed how brands could be created, and quashed the rumour that print journalism is dying. After the talk, we chatted with him to find out his advice for students as well as some of the highlights of his career.

Student James Weller says: “Having Darren Styles as a guest lecturer was amazing and he was such an inspirational man. He provided some really useful advice about magazine publishing to the group.

“I came away with a lot to think about and also some very helpful tips that I think will not only help with my degree but also with my future.”

In addition to Attitude magazine, Darren also started the Attitude Foundation earlier this year. He says: “I was truly inspired by the good work of the Elton John AIDS Foundation; over the 25 years of their existence they’ve raised £100 million. Because they have Elton’s name and support, they’re able to focus entirely on the philanthropic delivery of money. They pass the money on to people on the ground with the speciality and expertise to achieve the best possible effect.

“We wanted to replicate that, but for a broader base of LGBT causes. Since we have the platform and the opportunity, we thought we’d take it. Since the summer, we’ve raised about £170,000, which we’re in the process of distributing out to good causes.
