Daniela Kiryakova revamps Hedge End shop

Interior design student Daniela Kiryakova is seeing her shop design brought to life after producing the winning entry for a brief by The Bump Company in Hedge End.

The company, which was founded in 2009 by sisters Debbie Dyke and Trish Maggs, creates handcrafted baby clothes bouquets made from organic cotton. They approached Solent at the end of 2014 for ideas on how to design the interiors and signage for their new store.

As a result, first year students on the BA (Hons) Interior Design course were given a brief to design a crafting area, retail space and storage area for stock and equipment, with the winner seeing their designs turned into reality.

Sarah Bax, course leader, said: “We are incredibly fortunate to have so many external organisations and local businesses, like the Bump Company, coming to us with real-world projects for our students to work on.”

Daniela was presented with one of the store’s signature sock bouquets and received an award for her winning design by the Mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor Jane Welsh, who also officially opened the shop.

Director of The Bump Company, Debbie Dyke, said: “We chose Daniela’s designs as they demonstrated that she had listened well to the presentation of the brief, interpreted it in an intelligent and creative way and paid great attention to detail.”

Daniela, who has just started her second year at Solent, said: “It’s completely overwhelming to see my designs being used for the first time.

“It’s amazing to get the opportunity to work with real clients in my first year of university. That’s what’s great about Solent; they help make that happen.”
