City College students visit Solent's Showcase Gallery

‘An Exhibition in an Hour’ is the title of the new show in the foyer space of Southampton Solent University’s Sir James Matthews Building.

Solent’s Showcase Gallery recently arranged for students from City College to take part in workshops exploring its latest exhibition ‘Full Circle’ – a celebration of the renowned city art collection which is owned by the people of Southampton.

Working with artist Joe Ross, students participated in quick fire activities to get them thinking about and discussing the exhibition.

Tasks included automatic writing and a series of two minute drawing challenges – using charcoal to encourage expressive mark making and fluid lines.

Students also used photographs and photocopies of their drawings to create a collaborative collage, documenting their progress. New and original images and ideas were developed for the students’ sketchbook work.

The students’ work will be displayed in the foyer of the University’s Sir James Matthews Building in the city’s Cultural Quarter, above bar until Saturday 30 April.
