Realising that beauty boxes only offered a random selection of products, BA (Hons) Beauty Promotion student, Lucy Horsman created her own trend-based box for an online beauty retailer. We spoke to Lucy to find out more about what inspired her to create Face in a Box.

Tell us about your final major project

I created a trend based beauty box for online beauty retailer, Beauty Bay. I used trend forecasting to create three different boxes all based on a trend of spring/summer 2018. Each box came complete with five products, a small booklet explaining what products were in the box, and a QR code which once scanned it will take you to a YouTube tutorial on how to create the look.

What was the inspiration behind your project

I researched and found beauty boxes very interesting. I did notice that all beauty boxes were just a selection of random items. I also ordered a few beauty boxes to see what products I received. Once I saw them, I realised there was a gap for a beauty box that creates a whole makeup look rather than the random selection of beauty products. I then thought about creating a trend based beauty box.

What have you enjoyed most about your time at Solent?

My time at Solent has been very enjoyable. I've been exposed to new experiences within an industry I'm very passionate about. Solent has been really supportive throughout my degree to only further ignite my passion for the beauty industry.

What's next for you? Have you got any work or internships lined up?

I'm currently working on gaining images and work for my portfolio over summer. While I'm doing this I'll be applying for work experience and internships in beauty PR and marketing, which will hopefully lead to a career in that field.

What advice would you give to other students or potential students?

I would say to them, make the most of the advice and equipment available at Solent. Make the most of the cameras and photo studios to help you grow your portfolio and network with other students in different courses.
