Earlier this month, local Asian and ethnic radio station Unity 101 threw its annual anniversary celebration. With its close links to Solent University, several students were fortunate to be able to gain work experience at the event.

Five BA (Hons) Make-up and Hair Design students were excited to be supporting the event, with first year student Chun Hei Liu (Jimmy Liu) placed in charge.

Jimmy says: “I’ve been involved with the Chinese Association of Southampton (CAS) for the last two years as a volunteer, and Unity 101 is a strong partner. When I found out that CAS would be running a 20 minute fashion runway at the event to showcase ethnic group costumes from China, I volunteered to get involved, and my lecturers were really encouraging.

“I’m so thankful to Unity 101 and CAS for the opportunity, which has given me invaluable experience that will help me in my future career.”

Ram “Kelly” Kalyan, Project and Station Manager at 101, adds: “Our partnership with Solent has been going for 12 years and continues to go from strength to strength.

“Jimmy's and the other students’ involvement in the hair and make-up show was fantastic. Well done to all of them, and a million thanks.”
